The Basic Strategy Chart demonstrates the correct play for any given hand in Blackjack. The vertical column on the left of the chart represents the players card total. The top third (8-16) of the chart represent total card values such as 12 or 16. These totals are the sum of the player's hand and are referred to about 80% of the time. Start by memorizing the top portion of the Basic Strategy.
The bottom two thirds (A2-XX) of the chart represent special two card combinations such as a pair, or a hand with an Ace in it. These unique hands require special attention. Knowing exactly when to split a pair, or double when an Ace is present is of vital importance to increasing overall dollar winnings at the tables.
The top row of the chart represents the dealers "up card". To determine the correct play, match the player's total on the left, with the dealer's up card accross the top.
